a letter to an angel
on a first love left
as a schoolboy in a church I read
a voice inside my head whispered, 'that's you,'
and said, 'I'm going to peek at heaven'

culture of escape
starlight redirected
girl who'd gotten tangled in my life played no more
then in the car, alone (well, there goes everything)
(me I disconnect from you)
felt part of my soul eject into night

as if an occupant had checked out of the room

though I knew all the characters
the story was no longer mine
a flower in a vase; a broken window
float above a body on a bed
how is it no one taught us about this?

recovering a fallen grace
was my only priority
and the only road I'd ever known was missing
underworld inversion of exposure
darkness wandering

an alarm rang in my head
woke me to the mother wave
set me on a synchronistic journey
adrift for days, I stumbled to a shop on sunset boulevard

electric murmurs from an unlit screen
buzzed the air and drew a glance
at the edge of a record aisle
a pseudonym was hovering between
my eyes and an unfamiliar photograph

forgot about it, got a life, or so it seemed
until I met a girl already met within a dream
and though I'd caught a glimpse of how our future had been cast
we were in adjacent bubbles rolling past

in a gray day desperation
with a book by the sea
read of twain becoming one new man
a memory resurfacing

first light in three years
went back to the boulevard
found a song of a picture taking me in a shop one day
those diverging words echoed in my soul
a dream having a life of its own

reflecting occupants in disconnecting rooms
